I Screamed a Scream – Phoenix Arts Club

Halloween season is the perfect time to celebrate all things wicked, and I Screamed a Scream embraces that spirit with devilish delight. This cabaret brings together a collection of songs from some of theatre and film’s most iconic villains, alongside a few surprising choices that make you question what really defines a villain in the first place.

One of the most unexpected moments of the evening came with the inclusion of Bop to the Top from High School Musical. It’s a fun, upbeat number, but it does make you pause to wonder: are Ryan and Sharpay truly villainous enough to earn their place among such notorious company? Whether or not you think they fit the bill, the song’s addition brought a burst of nostalgia and humour to the night, and that playful unpredictability was part of the cabaret’s overall charm.

Hosting the show was James Edge, who proved to be not only a strong vocalist but also a witty and engaging master of ceremonies. His quick interactions with the audience, peppered with clever anecdotes and cheeky asides, kept the energy high and the atmosphere light-hearted. Edge’s charisma tied the evening together seamlessly, creating a sense of fun and spontaneity throughout.

Sharing the stage with him were Jessica Lim and Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall, both of whom delivered truly spooktacular vocals. Lim’s powerful rendition of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid captured the delicious villainy of Ursula with flair and finesse. Meanwhile, McDowall impressed with a haunting and intense medley from Sweeney Todd, showcasing both his vocal range and dramatic skill. Together, the trio offered a mix of humour, talent, and theatrical flair that made for a highly entertaining night.

While the show excelled musically, it could have gone a step further in its visual presentation. Incorporating more costume elements inspired by the characters, such as Elphaba’s iconic green skin or Ursula’s tentacles, would have elevated the performance even more. The addition of recognisable costumes or simple props could have helped transport the audience deeper into the wicked worlds the songs came from.

Overall, I Screamed a Scream was a thoroughly enjoyable evening of music, laughter, and villainous fun. With its talented cast, playful song choices, and spirited atmosphere, it made for a perfect Halloween treat at the Phoenix Arts Club.
