Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical is a bold and exhilarating reimagining of the cult classic 1999 movie Cruel Intentions. Blending drama, comedy, and nostalgia, this production takes audiences on a thrilling ride through seduction, deception, and power plays, all set to an electrifying soundtrack of beloved 90s hits.
Staying true to the original storyline, the show follows the cunning and manipulative duo of Sebastian Valmont (played by Will Callan) and Kathryn Merteuil (played by Lucy Carter) as they scheme their way through high school, using their charm, wit, and ruthlessness to control and destroy those around them.
One of the standout aspects of this production is its use of music. Packed with some of the most iconic songs of the decade, the show transports the audience back in time, evoking a wave of nostalgia. It features unforgettable hits such as Bye, Bye, Bye by NSYNC, Wannabe by the Spice Girls, Losing My Religion by R.E.M., Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer, and Genie in a Bottle by Christina Aguilera. These songs—and many more—are woven seamlessly into the storyline, elevating the emotional intensity of key moments and adding to the show’s overall energy.
The performances were another highlight. Abbie Budden, who played Annette Hargrove—the headmaster’s virtuous and idealistic daughter—delivered a breathtaking vocal performance, truly shining as a star of the show. Her voice was powerful and filled with emotion, making her portrayal of Annette both compelling and heartfelt. Lucy Carter flawlessly embodied Kathryn Merteuil’s calculated cruelty and seductive charm, staying true to the essence of the original character while bringing her own flair to the role.
Beyond the central trio, the show also gave more depth to supporting characters, particularly the relationship between Blaine Tuttle and Greg McConnell. Joe Simmons delivered a fantastic performance as Greg, convincingly portraying the struggles of a closeted football player attempting to keep his secret romance with Blaine under wraps.
The combination of sharp dialogue, humour, and infectious musical numbers made this production an absolute joy to watch. There were several laugh-out-loud moments that kept the audience engaged, while the dance routines were full of energy and enthusiasm, making it nearly impossible to sit still. The way the production flicked effortlessly between scenes and emotions, seamlessly tying music into the script, was particularly impressive.
That being said, at times, the number of musical performances felt slightly overwhelming. While the songs were enjoyable, a bit more focus on Sebastian and Annette’s relationship—allowing their love story to develop more naturally—would have made the emotional climax even more impactful. Seeing their connection grow and deepen onstage would have created a more devastating and heartbreaking conclusion to their story.
Overall, Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical is a highly entertaining and cleverly crafted adaptation that successfully captures the essence of the beloved film while adding a fresh and exciting musical twist. The nostalgia-fueled soundtrack, dynamic performances, and high-energy staging make it a must-watch for fans of the movie and lovers of ‘90s pop culture alike.
