A Truly Scrumptious Spectacle!
From start to finish, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the Musical is a magical and thrilling ride that captures the heart and imagination of audiences of all ages. Currently at the Palace Theatre Manchester. This spectacular production, directed by Thom Southerland, brings to life the beloved story with dazzling production values, an outstanding cast, and the timeless music and lyrics of Richard and Robert Sherman.
The show’s true star, of course, is the flying, floating Chitty Chitty Bang Bang itself—a breathtaking piece of stagecraft that left the audience gasping in awe. The technical wizardry behind the car’s seamless movements was simply outstanding, adding an extra layer of wonder to an already enchanting production. Complementing this spectacle were the grand, high-energy dance numbers that lit up the stage, bringing a joyful vibrancy to the classic musical.
Leading the cast, Ore Oduba shines as Caractacus Potts, bringing warmth, charm, and a wonderful singing voice to the role of the eccentric inventor. His chemistry with Ellie Nunn’s Truly Scrumptious is delightful, and Nunn herself is pitch-perfect, capturing the character’s elegance and spirit with ease. Liam Fox is a lovable presence as Grandpa Potts, providing plenty of heart and humour.
Charlie Brooks delivers a deliciously sinister turn as the infamous Child catcher, sending shivers down the spine with her eerie performance. However, one of the show’s biggest highlights comes from the hilarious double act of Adam Stafford and Michael Joseph as bumbling spies Boris and Goran. Their impeccable comic timing and slapstick humour had the audience roaring with laughter, stealing every scene they were in.
A full orchestra brought the Sherman brothers’ iconic score to life, from the uplifting title song to the tender “Hushabye Mountain,” every song felt significant. The entire production blew my socks off, it has all the nostalgia you’d want but a with fresh Panto-style energy, making it a must-see for fans of the original film and newcomers alike.
With dazzling performances, breathtaking effects, and catchy musical numbers, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Palace Theatre is pure theatre magic for the whole family to enjoy. A five-star triumph that will leave audiences singing and smiling long after the final curtain falls!
