Julie Hesmondhalgh brings her one-woman show to Bolton’s Octagon Theatre in February

Corrie legend Julie Hesmondhalgh is performing her auto-biographical one-woman show These I Love at Bolton’s Octagon Theatre for a limited run in February. In this show Julie who found fame playing the big hearted Hayley on the Weatherfield cobbles returns to her Lancashire roots. It’s a journey of discovery and a hymn to Julie’s own working-class childhood in Accrington, to her beloved dad and to the healing power of daftness. Julie is a long time and passionate supporter of regional theatres so is generously contributing her show to support the Octagon, which is a registered charity. She is currently on TV screens starring in the smash hit ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which has done so much to finally bring justice to hundreds of postmasters and postmistresses wro...

The Greatest Play In The History Of The World … – Hull Truck Theatre

Hallelujah! Theatres are open again and I had a front row seat at Hull Truck Theatre. Best of all, because of social distancing, I was the only occupant on that row. However, the “front row” in question was my sofa; yes, I was watching online. Julie Hesmondhalgh, she of Coronation Street fame, was the only human on the stage - a stage she shared with numerous pairs of shoes held in cardboard boxes on two large metal frames. This very plain setting, though at times a bit too unlit for my liking, was welcome as it didn’t detract from Hesmondhalgh’s amazing performance, in this first of a trilogy of monologues at the theatre in the near future. Dressed casually, Hesmondhalgh (who happens to be writer Ian Kershaw’s wife) recounts, in a loud, clear and, for want of a better word, m...

Julie Hesmondhalgh, Steve Evets and Shelley King to appear in Write Christmas

Write Christmas has been devised to bring some positivity to a potentially difficult holiday time. The aim is to inspire, involve and share fictional stories, videos, Christmas messages and more from boroughs across Greater Manchester, involving GM schools/groups for young people and actors and writers from all backgrounds. Work will be filmed and shared on each of the 12 days leading up to Christmas. Each ‘episode’ released online and as a podcast will share a piece by young people from our local schools and an adult writer. The project will be running to raise awareness and funds for the Wood Street Mission, a charity helping children and families living on a low income in Manchester and Salford. Christmas is usually a time we associate being about family, happiness, giving and r...

The Almighty Sometimes – Royal Exchange Theatre

Back in February 2018 the Royal Exchange Theatre showcased the world premiere of Kendall Feaver's The Almighty Sometimes. It had won the Judges Award at the 2015 Bruntwood Award for Playwriting and well deservedly. Anna is eighteen, working and lives at home with her mum, Renee. One night, after meeting him at a party, she brings home Oliver. At twenty-one he's a few years older but they had been at the same school and he had been taught by her mum. Anna likes and trusts him with her secret. She has been seeing a psychiatrist since she was 11 and is on a combination of medication to control her mental health issues. Although her illness is never named, through the play it becomes obvious how serious her mental illness is. But as Anna is beginning to embrace adulthood, she also begins q...
