Private Peaceful – Barn Theatre

Last night I had the chance to review one of my favourite books Private Peaceful as performed by Boxless Theatre productions and Barn Theatre. The production was directed by Alexander Knott and Zoe Grain. Micheal Morpurgo’s book Private Peaceful is set in Devon during World War One. It is told from the perspective of Tommo Peaceful, played by Emily Costello. Who is the first female actress to play Tommo. Her performance that was described by Michael Morpurgo as “extraordinary.” Barn theatre say that “Private Peaceful tells the story of Private Tommo Peaceful, who looks back on his upbringing, his romance with childhood sweetheart, Molly and the terrible events that saw him taken from this idyllic setting and into the horrors of war”. Throughout the show it jumps between the p...

The Secret Society of Leading Ladies! – Barn Theatre

Ready, player one? In a concept devised by Ryan Carter, an eclectic roster of musical theatre’s best-loved female personalities unites for a unique character select screen-style production. For each of the five ‘levels’, a trio of leading ladies and their song titles are displayed, and it’s up to the viewer to pick who takes to the stage. This is a really fun opportunity to relive some of your favourite musical tunes or experience something completely new. If it’s too difficult to decide, though, an automatic selection is made after 45 seconds. Exploring the mysterious venue she has been invited into, the first performer then breaks into song. This might well be Jarnéia Richard-Noel who gives an attention-grabbing rendition of ‘I Didn’t Plan It’ as Waitress’ Janet. Her smooth voice ...

Dunkirk star Fionn Whitehead stars in online production of The Picture Of Dorian Gray

Fionn Whitehead, star of Dunkirk and Black Mirror, will take the title role in a new online adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic play The Picture of Dorian Gray (16th – 31st March) directed by Theatr Clwyd’s Artistic Director Tamara Harvey. Most recently seen starring in the Lionsgate and Saban Films’ Don’t Tell A Soul, Fionn Whitehead is best known for his critically acclaimed performance as the protagonist Tommy in Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award nominated war film, Dunkirk. Set in a profile pic-obsessed, filter-fixated world where online and reality blur, influencer Dorian Gray makes a deal. For his social star never to fade. For the perfect self he broadcasts to the world to always remain. But as his mental health starts to decline, as corruption and murderous depravity start t...

Peter Pan – Barn Theatre

With this one-man adaptation of the classic family tale, the Barn Theatre has another success on their hands. Equally as thrilling as it is heart-warming, this version transports the audience from normality to Neverland. All with the help of that famous, ever-youthful boy. There have been countless retellings of J.M.Barrie’s creation and everyone has their favourites. From the big screen (“Hook” coming to mind, whereas I wish I could erase “Pan” from it) to stage musicals such as “Finding Neverland”, it is obvious that the appeal for the pixie-dust sprinkled adventure has not faltered. Playing on the universal appeal for the story, the Barn team have created a play with family at its forefront. Waylon Jacobs (Hamilton) plays a travelling father who is coaxed into a bedtime story fro...

Marry Me a Little – Barn Theatre

Hearing of a Stephen Sondheim revue, I don’t think you’d be alone in thinking that it's going to be a bunch of ballads. I’m happy to tell you that with Marry Me a Little, this is not the case. It’s much, much more. The Barn theatre have cleverly updated this celebration of Sondheim and have produced a fresh love story. A set of two apartments sharing the centre of the stage, splits the recently parted couple as they go about their newly single lives. The production is sung-through, but the plot is brought together by innovative use of the technical elements. With a genius addition of a phone-screen backdrop, and even a song brought on by tinder swiping, catapult the story into the modern day. Jukebox musicals have attempted to merge catalogues of songs and fluid storylines for years...
